MT-01 2005 stage 2 question
« on: May 19, 2021, 09:55:57 am »
Hello guys. I am about to by finaly my MT-01 🙂 But i have now just see one with Akra stage 2 also for sale here in Sweden. So my question is, why on stage two mod the exhaust cover is opened from the middle exposing the exhaust can? I mean if i want ti have a passenger on the bike isnt it burn risk on them when they ride at the back or go on or off the seat?
Otherwise i will just fet one with the original exhaust syst even though i live the akra syst!

Thank very much in advance for your help

Hi Casino,

Usually if a bike has stage 2 it has the single seat kit too. My advise would still be buy the bike with stage 2 so long as it's not priced way higher than the standard bike, as you could sell all the stage 2 parts without a problem. Just make sure the stage 2 bike comes with all it's original parts including ECU.

Cheers

Max

Hi Max!

Thank you for your quick reply! This bike has the double seat mouted already. I will attach a photo here so you can see it.
That was a very good thing to ask him. I will do that regarding the original parts!
Why on stage one there is a full exhaust cover for akra and on stage 2 they change it? Is it only for a sporter look with the single seat?
Thats also why i wonder why it cant be done with the stage two.

Here are two photos as i mensioned. Stage 1 slip ons with full exhaust covers. Stage two the one i am considering buying. Otherwise i have one on the same price all original parts on the bike. Only two defects for the one with the original parts: LH fork trace of small oil leak steam and the end of the exhaust cover has a small damage at the rear end.

The majority of Stage 2 setups don't have the Yamaha Stage 2 ECU as the full Ti exhaust system was often sold separately and that cost enough without the ECU! It also wasn't essential to have the single seat kit so quite a few are the standard seat.

I wouldn't get too excited about the Stage 2 exhaust as it doesn't make a massive difference to the power output - my original 2005 Stage 1 (end cans only) with an ECU modification and a dyno setup was slightly up on my later 2010 Stage 2 with Yamaha ECU but they do feel different. Even the Stage 3ish bored out one i have isn't much better on paper but once again feels different.

B-)

Buy the Stage 2...plenty of people mount the mufflers inside the original full plastic covers if you are worried about heat. But dont be. They run pretty cool up there... Also, the original plastic covers are possible to find for sale..I have a a pair in the attic.

The Stg2 system is worth a fortune if you sell it on...!

Thanx Tim! Very greatfull to get your info.
It sounds good. Ill go and check the bike then and if everything is ok i will get it.

Regarding the ECU, if its the original ECU that is mapped it should be ok right?

Unfortunately, it isnt that simple. The standard ECU1 use a closed loop system. 0-20-% throttle openings and 0-2750(?) rpms is managed via real time data stream using the O2 senor to control fueling. Which is why remapping/power commander is a pointless affair (ECU1 will always correct in this parameter)

The stage 2 Akra system doesnt use O2 sensor or ExUp. It is NOT closed loop...and this is the crucial reason why anyone fitting akras without the ECU is a muppet...!
Only solution is an expensive reflash. Or a stage 2 ECU.
A great bike, but slightly quirky ECU...!

Ok, thats great info Tim... appreciate it!
Is there a way for me to see if its the standard ECU or the correct one on the st 2 bike?
Sorry for all these question, Ill go for a test drive next week and ill call the guy on monday for some more info. Its very far approx 700km from here so ill checkit and test it and if its good ill drive it directly back.

My other option is a standard 2009 a bit less miles but 2k euros expensier.
But i am drawn more to the st 2.... at least from the look and ill have to see how i feel on the road!

Part numbers of the ECU will tell you...Ask to see pics.
An obvious tell is that the dash will be showing the engine check light warning...(because the ECU doesnt see the O2 sensor and records an open circuit) but this may also be something unrelated as it does this whenever it detects an open circuit/invalid values on the diagnostic systems....
Ive never come across it myself, but I have found people online having trouble with bikes they bought cheap, and then couldnt get to run because the previous owner apparently assumed it was like all other bikes....!

  Stage 1 OEM ECU number MY2005; 5YUW82501000 (https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/yamaha-parts/2005-mt01-motorcycles/electrical-2)

The other thing is, if it's a stage 2 ECU he should have the original too as they have no sales value as a part.
