Starting problems
« on: »
Hi All, I have another starting problem.   I have replaced the starter motor and solenoid from a previous issue I had and the bike was working well for a while.  I am now wondering if the decompression valve is working correctly.  The bike tries to start and turns a little but then stops.  The battery is good and fully charged. How can I check the decompression valve?  Thanks.

Steve

It could be nothing more than the activating "spade" has become distorted, meaning it is failing to activate the decomp rod because it is bent away from it point of contact...
Yes..it is a flimsy flap of steel welded to to a rotating rod, like an arm...!  Look inside the engine casing to find it....
This happened to mine but I had the bike apart to fit stage 3 and wasnt taking close enough notice of its original position...
If you havent removed that side of the casing, Im not sure if it can be the same issue. Perhaps it went bad with all the failed starting procedures you were previously chasing  ?
The solenoid might be failing, also. There is a diag code for that. Check your manual...

Thanks, I haven't taken any side casings off. I don't know where the rotating arm or the solenoid is. I have tried to locate it via the web but have had no joy. Which casing do you take off to expose the activating spade? Can I take the casing off an see if it is operating. Do you know where the plug supplying the solenoid is? Sorry for the number of questions, I would like to sort this out and get to know how it is working.

I had solinoid problems years ago
I’m sure the code is 38 on the dash
Fixed mine for pennies by cutting it open and replacing the windings and a stronger resister inside and closing it back up cased in araldite and soldered the cut part shut
Never missed a beat in 9 years
