New member in Berkshire
« on: March 29, 2021, 08:07:05 pm »
I would like to introduce my new bike. I have had a few years off from riding and could not pass up the opp to have one of these.

A day in and few bits need to be done to make her in A1 condition and may look for some advice.

Chuffed to bits is an understatement and the weather looks great for a proper tryout.

Excuse the lid, I just started the BBQ.

I know its a heavy bike, what paddock stand would you recommend?

Many thanks, rich

Two things I would consider:
1. Centre stand (from SW Motec)
2. Scottoiler

Everything is so much easier with a centre stand, although the Scottoiler makes adjusting the chain a very rare occurence indeed.
Much easier to wipe off the oil from the rim than struggling with the sticky sprays. A paper napkin, and it's clean again.

Not thought about centre stand, worth looking into.

I have managed to get out and ride the bike and two things I think need changing. The tyres are nearly 10 years old and squared off a bit and while they are still legal, going to change for Michelin pilots.

The second thing I have noticed is the brakes, they are not inspiring confidence, the amount of travel just feels off. The bike just passed its MOT, but thinking of replacing the rubber hose for braided ones. Anything else or things I should consider on the bike that would help improve?

Thanks again guys.

Oh, and a Barnett clutch of course. Springs and plates if the clutch is slipping.
Don't know about the brakes, new pads, oil and careful bleeding? I think mine are ok, but it will depend on what you are coming from.

Welcome. As you said earlier, the bike is heavy, something I only noticed when braking:) It would do no harm to change the fluid, I got braided hoses from Venhill. Look nicer but can’t say I noticed much difference when braking.

Max you mention a really good point, what have I come from to compare.

I have a BMW GS 2004 and the brakes will amazing. These have braided hoses. I also have a Harley Street Bob (2019) with single disc. Both feel so much better than the  MT01.

It was serviced a week ago before I bought it and the brake fluid was changed. My gut tells me replace the rubber brake hose for braided (it’s a 14 year old bike).

Welcome any thoughts

You should also look at the pads. Mine's 15 years old, only changed the pads and fluid once, (OE stuff) Brakes are excellent and can lock both wheels at almost any speed. If its been standing a long time - do the mods as above. Aint got nothing to lose!

Thanks for the replies chaps.

The bike was serviced a week before I bought it and the fluid was changed. I have booked it in and having the hoses to braided ones, but will also will ask them to look at the pads Bally.

Bit chuffed today, the exhausts covers not centred and added some washers and it looks Bob on....... It was bugging me.

The tyres are at best between 5-8 years old and only done 200 miles, changing them over to Michelin Pilot Powers 3CT. i don’t have confidence in the Metzeler so I need to do this to enjoy the bike.

Plan is then to enjoy the bike for the summer before the wi ear refurb

Doubt braided lines will make much difference. Let me know if I'm wrong though ... certainly I've never noticed any improvements when fitted. They do look nice though. Check pads ... organic vs sintered. The sintered are much harder. I find the MT brakes have plenty of stopping power. Mine are 6 piston .... I think the earlier ones were 4. I've also a 2014 1200GS and agreed the brakes are good but any braking differences I would put down to the telelever front end and lighter weight. The telelever sees minimal front end dive with hard braking whereas conventional forks will compress especially if set up soft. Just my 2 cents ... cheers ... both great bikes.

gidday mate, sounds like the bike has been sitting for a long time. Most def change the tyres, any of the good known brands.
Clean the discs and replace the pads and put braided on. The venhills are neat.
Change the fork oil, find some money and put an ohlins on the rear.
While you are doing all that, check the headstem for play. Replace with standard bearings if needed.
Greetings from australia.

So tyres replaced with Michelin Pilot 3, bike is having new lines and discs and then asses how the brakes feel and take it from there. Fingers crossed that is enough
