Is it my starter motor??
« on: »
Hi All
Just fitted a brand new Yuasa battery and still i get the same click from the solenoid and instrument lights dim to zero..

I talked to a mechanic that told me sometimes when a starter goes it seizes ..
If thats the case with mine then this would account for the dimming of lights and voltage drop to 4 volts ??

Can a dodgy starter relay still make a click even when its kaput ?

Is that likely ?

Advice please...

Power is how hard you hit the wall..
Torque is how far you take the wall with you

Something is shorting to ground; a seized starter, a broken wire somewhere or a defective relay. Try to feed 12V directly to the starter to see if it turns?

Sounds like the starter I think the magnets come free and jam it up I think a warrior one is cheaper  if it's fecked

Can be :

- Starter motor
- fault in the wire harness (short circuit)
- Starter relay
- Battery bolt not tightned

#1: happened to me (and others)
#2 : rare
#3 : I have seen a few faulty relays. So I'd check it
#4 : I guess you tightned everything when you installed the new battery, so that's not it

If it's the starter motor, take it apart and look inside. Mine was serviceable. The magnets just got loose, so I reglued all of them, cleaned everything, replaced the brushes, and reinstalled the whole thing.

If it's the relay, well ... just replace it ;D

As above- pull the starter and connect 12v on the bench..

Thanks very much to you all for your advice..
I know the oil tank needs removing to get to the starter Motor..
Can I get away with re using the gasket and maybe add a thin layer of sealant to the gasket faces(Fowlers dont have one in stock).

Thanks again,

S

If the gasket is not torn when you take it apart, it can be re-used. A thin film of sealant does not hurt but don't use silicone as it may result in drops of cured silicone inside the engine. Remote chance, I know, but why risk it?

It's a regular O-ring. I had no problem re-using it ...

What mileage have bikes got on them before the starter motor goes? Do all MT-01s suffer from this?

That really varies.... For me it happened at 50K km, others before, others way later (or not at all). Most of the time it's just a glue problem. The magnets are glued by applying just a single drop of glue. That does not really go well. I would recommend to take the motor apart and fix the issue as a precautionary measure ... When the problem occurs it's often too late (magnets destoyed, displaced ...). It's not complicated to do but it requires just some patience  ::)

Thanks for that. My buke has only done around 13K km, so maybe a spot of precautionary work is called for. Incredible that Yamaha couldn't spare a spot more glue.

Are there any other common problems with this bike?

No, really not that many. Fork seals are noticeable weak spot. Other than that there are things that have been fixed/recalled by Yamaha : steering head bearings, TPS, fuel pump and shock absorber rod. Those are old problems that should not occur anymore (except maybe the TPS).

Thanks. As mine is one of the last ones, it shouldn't have these issues, I'd have thought.

Ther really are great fun to ride and feel lighter than the 265 kg weight.
