G'day
« on: »
Hi from Sydney Australia,
Purchased a 2011 model with 20000 kms in April.
I have fitted MT10 indicators, tail tidy and DAM exhausts(just mufflers).
There seems to be a hesitation at WOT application at low revs in 3/4/5th gears.
If you roll the throttle on smoothly the bike picks up as expected, but if you open right up quickly it bogs for a while, until maybe 3700 rpm or so.
Will a K&N filter complement the open pipes without requiring further fueling adjustment, or is the hesitation more related to throttle mapping in the ECU?.
Really enjoying the bike,so different to anything else on the road,
Cheers,
Tim

Welcome Tim to the forum
not as big as the old forum but its growing
has your MT had a full service since you've owned it plugs air filter not much point in my view of buying a power commander as they don't kick in until 3.500 rpm by which time the MT at its best if only the cans have been swapped it shouldn't make any difference  to the fuelling unless the exup valve has been removed might be worth a good Dyno run see if that picks any thing up
Enjoy the MT and the forum don't forget we like photos as well
Ash

PS we have a few Aussie members on here who will chime in

Heres one of them. Hi Tim. At 20000 as Ash points out first service is due which is mainly plugs. There are a number of points to look at, can you spare a moment?
Air filter, if its standard then at 20000 it needs replacing. K&N is good.
Dam mufflers, wont make any problem with standard everything.
EXUP, on left near footpeg, has chrome cover. Remove the chrome cover and you will see the push pull cables. It may have been wired open, if not it should be. With that cover off and assuming it hasnt been wired then drop the cable that closes it and with bike running (dont burn fingers) open and close the exup, you will hear the difference. Its not causing any issue standard except it sounds like a 350  :'( , wire it open and leave cables disconnected.

This next is important because you dont know the bikes history. When you start the bike cold does it start easy and does it turn over twice and almost seem to fail or does it start after a single turn?  The answer here will give a clue as whether ecu has been flashed.

That will do for now
cheers Graeme (as username suggests, Omeo, Vic)

At 20.000 KM the valve clearances should be checked. See my post about it from April 20 this year.

Yes, but with one qualification. It is a bit of a job to do and on old forum (hey, we should start an acronym for that) it was said that dealer advise was that if the bike started well then no need to check. Based on the fact that it almost never does. And not related to the "starting" I mentioned earlier.

Well, I had one valve that needed adjustment and my bike started well both before adjustment and after.
The prudent thing would be to check at 20000 and also at the next interval to get a feeling for how the valves behave.

You are right, would be prudent.
I keep thinking that I know the "Dirty Irving" moniker from somewhere and would have said the old forum but obviously not. ? Other forums you are on in Aus?

Thank -you Gents,
I do have the history of the bike as it was one owner from new purchased form Ballina.
The guy I purchased from has an  06 as well which he has raced at the salt flats in Lake Gairdner.
He owns a Mechanical workshop and has serviced the bike himself, apart from fork seals which were done elsewhere.
ECU is standard .
I have cleaned the existing air filter but will replace with K&N.
The exup seems to keep things quiet at low RPM whichI don't mind around town.
I will try the cable removal though.
Bike starts after 2-3 revolutions and i imagine I will be in the market for a battery soonish.Maybe Lithium?
Spark plugs and valve check maybe in order then.
It's going to be a long term keeper.
Graeme you may have seen me post at bikeme.
Cheers,
Tim

Ah,bikeme, ok. Dont tell Frogz you have one, no, cancel that, DO tell him. The thing about how long to start is the ecu. Anything above standard starts in about half the revolutions so its a sure way of seeing if ecu is standard. Standard engine and ecu means that the K&N plus mufflers and wiring the exup open are really all you can do to it. Nothing wrong with that they are a great bike, just a bit more character with these changes. The bike is still very acceptable with exup open round town.
Enjoy, catch up one day. Have a look on bikeme in rides with pics re phillip island monday just gone.
cheers Graeme

Hi Guys,
Just found this forum, I was a member of the forum started by Laz way back when. I was disappointed when the other forum closed down, but happy to find this one. Or is this the same forum started by Laz, as the format and badge looks the same. I do notice some of the forum members names are also the same.

So I’m either happy to be back or glad to have joined this new forum.

Cheers
