Hi all,
I've just bought an MT-01 after pining over them for several years. Just to be different, I bought it in New Zealand, although I live in the UK (I head back in the summer and do a bit of riding and see the family... bust mostly riding).
I got a mate to pick up the bike, all seemed good, seller put a new battery in it, did oil and filter change. Mate started it fine, rode it home (30 minute ride, went well), put it in the garage... now it won't start.
Starter turns over fine, engine just won't catch. Checked the basic stuff (has gas, in neutral, stand up, clutch in) just won't start.
Are there any gotchyas we need to be aware of? Any obvious things we can check? Neither mate or I are particularly mechanically minded, but can do the simpleton stuff, before I revert to getting it to garage.
Seller seemed honest (I hope so, he was a cop!!), but he can't think of why it won't start now.
Bikes an 07, done 50k kms. Has already had one starter motor replacement.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers,
David.
Are there any noises from the fuel pump in the tank? If it works, it usually slurps loudly.
Kill switch?
I spent half an hour many moons ago trying to bump start an old CBR600 because i had accidentally flicked the bloody kill switch!
B-)
you said a new battery has been fitted I once removed the battery from my 01 after refitting it started fine went on a small run stopped for ten mins then it wouldn't start turned out that the earth terminal looked and felt tight but needed tightening more so worth giving it a try
Thanks for the advise, guys.
Mate got the garage to pick the bike up: they got it going with (quote from mate's message): Bike didn't start at sip. Then he charged battery and jump stated bike.. and now it starts everytime
Hmmmm... this doesn't fill me with confidence! Sounds to me the bike isn't charging the battery... or maybe my mate left the park lights on? (Does the MT have park lights? I know I've flattened my Ducati battery by turning the key just passed the lock, which goes into park and keeps the lights on).
@mt01ash: I think you are onto something there, sounds very similar. Hope the garage checked the terminals, you would hope they did!
Will report back in a few days, bike gets picked up tomorrow!
I need the bike in good shape as I arrive and have to jump straight on it and ride 300kms.
The MT 01 has indeed a parking light key position, one click past locked position. A trap for the unvary.
Hi Guys,
An update: Mate got the bike back, went for a ride, cut out completely while riding along at 50km/h, got stuck in middle of road, had to call police to block traffic while he got the bike off the road (how heavy are they???). Got it started again and rode home! Garage picked it up again, and turns out the starter solenoid had "melted". Sounds like it was on the way out, intermittently breaking the circuit, causing the fuel pump to stop too (hence the turning over but not starting).
The bike had a new starter motor recently; garage said when the old one was on the way out, was probably generating a lot of heat which damaged the solenoid.
What have solenoids got against me? Had one go on my Benelli last year, had to get recovered (much to my wife's amusement, she mocks me for my Italian weakness - also have a Ducati)
So, sounds like we are good to go! Can't wait to ride the bloody thing now! Although my mate sounds like he is getting a bit attached to it... he's rides a Suzuki V-Strom 650, poor guy.
Thanks for all your help.
Dave.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you then ;D8
