Clutch slip
« on: »
Hi All,

My current 2011 MT is my 3rd one..
My first 2005 Yellow / Black one had clutch slip in a standard tune set up.. I ended up fitting a Barnett clutch kit with the standard springs (not the race ones supplied as an alternative) and it cured the slip very well.

My current bike:
I have the advantage with my current bike in that I know the previous owner had it for 5 years and always used a semi synthetic oil and never fully synthetic. However it has had the Michael special stage II ECU tune and I think this has created the clutch slip.
In my opinion I think the standard clutch spring arrangement in the MT-01 is barely up to the job of containing the 150Nm of torque in standard trim!!
So with a tuned ECU its asking a lot of it in my opinion.
You will note even the R1 uses 6 springs (Like the Barnett set up) and not the underwhelming single spring plate set up of our bikes.
My slip only occurs at motorway speeds in top gear if say I overtake with gusto (say around 3250rpm onwards).
Its not a major issue for now as the lower gears seem fine.
Ultimately I will go the Barnett route simply because its a far better engineered solution to providing sufficient pressure on the plates.

On the subject of the Barnett set up, do I remember correctly that with that kit installed you can use fully synthetic oil??
Lastly, does anyone have the HP and Torque figures for a Michael flashed stage II ECU with CAT, O2 sensor and EXUP valve removed?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Simon

Torque is how far you take the wall with you

Hi Simon
Have you thought about doing a double clutch spring very common on the Vmax 1700 I think I'm right in that they both use the same clutch plates and springs the Vmax clutch will be toast if you take it down the drag strip on a regular basis within  9,000 miles 12,000 normal use my 1st MT I got 12,500 before I replaced the clutch
I've done the Double spring on my vmax just makes pulling in the leaver a little harder and you will stall the engine until you get to know how quick it bites the one small issue when doing this is the retainer spring is designed for the depth of one spring a guy in the USA called RickRash52 makes new retainer spring for $60 that includes p&p you don't have to have it but it stops the top spring from moving a little when this mod has been done most say they have done over 23,000 and still pulling like a train just another option for you
PS have you got after market leavers on I have had Pazzo and ASV on both have given me the same symptoms that you are getting fine around town but do 50mph on a motorway then give it a handfull it spins up so if you've got after market leavers just try putting the clutch leaver on

Hi Ash,

Yes I have after market levers on but there is a good half inch or so of "slack" before the lever takes up the action as it were.
So I cant see the levers being the issue.
After I got home from The Barn I briefly put the original lever back in just to compare the amount of free play.. Very similar to the after market lever
In the lower gears its fine..
In fact the only time I have had it sleep was on the Motorway when I was coming to meet you at The Barn..
I rarely use motorways as I am NOT a fan of them.

Thanks for your response,

Simon

don't like motorways either for riding if you still got the original leavers on its worth giving it a try with the originals nothing lost in trying
