I am thinking that probably the easiest way of loosing some weight where it would be most beneficial would be to install a litium battery instead of the standard lead type. More than 3 kg lighter, and very high mounted. Has anyone tried this?

Yes Dan, last year. It works just fine. Your bike shop will be able to look up the right one for you. Takes up less space too.

It is surprisingly hard isnt it, throw that foil sleeve away.
The trick is to hold the battery with one hand and remove the motorcycle with the other hand.

Use the threaded posts to attach a cable/flexi handle...and remove with ease !

But not a conductive cable
If you think the battery hard to get in and out try getting the the air box back in
