perhaps the field coil became reverse polarised? May need to re-flash it. There is probably nothing "wrong" with it so don't bin it or let me have it!

Just a note on a wacky recent occurrence with my 07 MT01...during a cold crank one morning there was a momentary mild thud followed by a whizzing sound as the starter had begun to freewheel without turning the engine.
Assuming the one way starter clutch had failed I removed the side casing to find the starter was turning the wrong way on the button now /- so naturally only slipped the starter clutch!
I’ve since fitted a new starter (which turns the other way correctly) problem solved....there was no engine work or battery disconnection to swap polarity prior to this, the starter simply swapped its direction permanently during a crank...
Wierd.
.
Luckily I found a compatible £120 XV 1600 starter instead of £750 for a new MT unit..
That is weird, glad its sorted
