A standard ecu MT turns over about 1 1/2 times to start and a stage 2 or 3 about 1 turn.
Where did you get that information ? Just curious ...
FYI : I have a stage 2 ECU and have had magnet failure (2 of them loose). The OEM really used a minimal quantity of glue (just one small drop per magnet).
And separately, the magnet thing is likely as you suggest, a bad bunch. But in trying to point out that excess use could also cause heat problems I mentioned the turnover rate thingo. Prob doesnt happen.

Hi, I may be wrong in the exact number of turns but we have talked about this before. Standard ecu the bike takes about 1/1/2 to 2 turns to start.
Either stage 2 or 3 ecu gives a quicker start routine, a single turn (sort of). How do I know?, experience.

Re this whole issue. Mine is at 72000kms and is a stage 4 and 1800cc. It still runs the original starter.
It also runs a Li battery which spins a little easier.

If your bike has some issue that means you have to keep turning it over then you have a situation of declining voltage and increased amp draw. Would this overheat the starter causing the magnet problem?
As many of you are in the UK and have longish periods of not riding, could this be a clue.
Maybe always charge the battery before even trying to start it. Dont spend time trying to get it to turn over and then putting charger on, you have already given battery and starter a hard time.

Hi, Mines a 2009 MT01 SP. Can anyone tell me what are the tell tale signs when the starter is on its way out. Mines a lazy turn over but always has been. Thanks Steve
Lazyness is indeed a sign, but not 100% accurate. The best way to be sure : take it apart when changing your oil. It takes 5 minutes to get the motor out.

Has anyone tried the roadstar starters my starter has started grumbling today along with clutch slipping after remap on the Dyno
I know some guys who did. No problem at all.

It's a sealed unit & the same recurring issue every time...the magnets on the inner housing detach themselves & it's kaput!
I don't know about yours, but mine is definetely not sealed. Detached magnets doesn't mean that it's kaput. Many times (not always) they can be glued back on. I did it on mine (and replaced the brushes) and works like a charm.
Anyone else had these issues or knows where I might get my collection of MT-01 starter motors refurbished?
Bring them on, I'll fix them ;D

I have an original 2005 SP1 MT-01 since new with over 100K on it...
To date I have had to replace 3 x starter motors & at nearly €700 it's becoming an expensive habit...
