I couldn't agree more. I bought my bike with 9000km on it, and it had been used as a test machine. I suspect that the journos etc probably wouldn't have been too loving with their cleaning regimen.. :) Like you, I hand wash my bikes, but I WD40 the engine/wheels/frame and give it a wipe off after every wash. It leaves a great finish and keeps everything nice.

About the fork seals. My bike I ride reguarly has nearly 70000km on the original seals and not even a weep.
The other one I have had for 2 years (2005 model) are stuffed at 23000.
One sat for a long time and the seals naturally dry out somewhat and one is used, that says a lot.
Also, I spray a little wd40 or crc on legs occasionally and wipe over, I think this helps.
Thirdly, some wash their bikes with pressure spray then leave. Not just a dry clean leg but one with no lube on it. Even that left by the action of the slider.
I also have suspicions about people washing with high pressure and using a wax cycle as well.
So, leg is washed clean then coated with a wax which dries and then the poor old seal has to slide over that as well and probably scrape the wax off.

I guess so, Nikk - they were nearly ten years old after all. One thing I did find was that there was a weird almost rust-like build-up on the fork legs right near the seal when the forks were fully extended that wasn't visible until they were apart. Perhaps that caused the failure. Anyway, it came off okay with a bit of elbow grease and left no damage to the finish. Be interested to hear whether you find the same thing.

Jota - I've got one of these bikes (love it now that I've got the suspension right.. :)) ) and recently replaced the fork seals and oil. The number that I got from Yamaha Australia was 508ml per fork, or , with the spring out and stanchion fully compressed, 70mm from the top.

Hi, I have a 2010 MT01 SP with Ohlins forks. The seals are leaking and I need to replace. Does anyone have a service manual or sectional drawing they could send me? I,m struggling to even find the amount of oil in each leg.
